Liverpool: Klopp discusses title race

Liverpool lost their 68-match unbeaten run at home in the Premier League to Burnley after a 1-0 defeat left them well off the pace for the title. There was a surprise decision before the game too as Georginio Wijnaldum was handed the captain's armband for the first time.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp appeared to send a message to the club’s owners Fenway Sports Group over Georginio Wijnaldum and his contract situation.

Holland midfielder Wijnaldum was named captain for the 1-0 defeat to Burnley on Thursday night, the first time Klopp has handed him the armband.

The decision comes as speculation continues to grow over the 30-year-old’s future and whether or not he will sign a new contract at Liverpool.

Klopp has made no secret of the fact that he is desperate to keep Wijnaldum on his books.

And the German appeared to send a very clear message to the club’s owners John W. Henry and Tom Werner of FSG that they should give him the financial backing to offer Wijnaldum what it takes to persuade him to stay.

As seen by the recent Arsenal scenarios with Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the longer a contract runs down, the more clubs generally have to shell out to keep their star players.

And Klopp will no doubt need some decent coffers put into his wage kitty to ensure he doesn’t lose Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum is being strongly linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer if he turns down a new contract at Anfield.

The Mirror claim that the Dutchman has rejected their advances as he seeks a move to Spain.

And Wijnaldum did very little to quell any fears that that is the case when recently asked whether there is an update on his current situation at Liverpool.

He told Sky Sports: "No. There is no update yet.

"I also think I am not the one who should give the update, the club should. If there will be an update the club will give it."

Following their shock defeat to Burnley, Liverpool have now won just one of their last five league games, and sit down in fourth place in the league, six points off Manchester United in first.

They face bitter rivals United in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.
