Chelsea boss Frank Lampard wants to sign Kai Havertz. It’s an open secret the Blues are eager to snap up the Bayer Leverkusen star, dreaming of pairing him alongside the likes of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. And, if the 21-year-old does move to Stamford Bridge, it’s feasible the Blues will listen to offers for Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Chelsea have enjoyed a good start to the summer transfer window, already securing deals for Werner and Ziyech.

And, now, it’s Operation Havertz.

Lampard feels the Bayer Leverkusen star has the potential to succeed at Stamford Bridge having watched him take the Bundesliga by storm this season, scoring 12 goals and registering six assists from 30 matches.

Chelsea have the money to buy Havertz with the Werner and Ziyech arrivals funded by the blockbuster departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid last summer.

And, if they do succeed in their mission to land the 21-year-old, then Barkley and Loftus-Cheek may be shown the door.

When Chelsea signed Barkley in the January transfer window of 2018, they thought they were onto a winner.

Though he’d struggled at Everton in the months leading up to his move to west London the Blues believed they were signing a player capable of replacing Lampard’s goals from the middle of the park.

He’s had his moments - including a winning goal in their crunch FA Cup showdown with Leicester last weekend.

But Barkley has failed to live up to expectations at Chelsea and is far too inconsistent for Lampard’s liking.

With the Blues boss sold on Mason Mount, and Mateo Kovacic shining this term, it seems likely that Barkley would be the fall guy.

The midfielder has made just 16 appearances in the Premier League this season - and registered just three assists.

There’s a sense he isn’t good enough for Chelsea and, should Havertz sign, they may cut him loose in order to balance the books.

Another player whose place at Stamford Bridge would be in jeopardy if Loftus-Cheek.

The Blues know the England international has talent and the potential to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

But injuries have hit Loftus-Cheek hard in recent years and Lampard knows he can’t afford any passengers on his mission to steer the Blues back to the top.

The 24-year-old has been limited to just two appearances this term.

Therefore, it’s possible Chelsea will finally snap and move him on, with Havertz able to play in the same position.

While the Blues want the Leverkusen star, he isn’t the only player on their radar ahead of the summer transfer window.

Leicester’s Ben Chilwell is also in their sights although, with the Foxes wanting big money for their star asset, Lampard may have to look elsewhere.

And links to Declan Rice are also refusing to go away - particularly after his impressive performance for West Ham against the Blues in the week.

Havertz is the priority, however. And whether Chelsea are able to bring him in is something only time will tell.
