are expected to splash the cash this summer as Frank Lampard stamps his mark on the squad at Stamford Bridge. The Blues boss has already stated his desire to close the gap to Manchester City and this season's runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Chelsea currently trail the Reds by a huge 34 points and are mathematically unable to catch Jurgen Klopp's side this term.

However, Lampard is planning for the future and will hope to construct a squad that can take the fight to Liverpool in 2020/21.

The Blues boss has already laid the foundations for this assault by blooding a number of youngsters including Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount.

The pair are expected to play a key role at Chelsea for a number of years while the likes of Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Fikayo Tomori are also established in the senior squad.

The promotion of these academy graduates has given the Blues some much-needed depth and allows Lampard to oversee a clear-out of dead weight this summer.

Starting between the posts, it remains to be seen whether Kepa Arrizabalaga will remain at Stamford Bridge next season after an inconsistent campaign.

A number of replacements have been touted but it currently appears as though Lampard will give the Spaniard another chance, with Willy Caballero staying on as experienced back-up after signing a 12-month contract extension.

Captain Cesar Azpilicueta currently has ownership of the right-back spot but has healthy competition from James.

DON'T MISS

Meanwhile, Davide Zappacosta and Victor Moses are both on-loan in Serie A and could return next term or be sold to raise some modest funds.

Antonio Rudiger is first-choice in central defender but Lampard is yet to settle on his preferred partner with Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Tomori all failing to consistently perform.

Jerome Boateng has been linked with a move from Bayern Munich but Lille youngster Gabriel Magalhaes or RB Leipzig starlet Dayot Upamecano are more likely arrivals.

Emerson Palmieri is expected to rejoin Maurizio Sarri at Juventus while former Blues boss Antonio Conte wants Marcos Alonso at Inter Milan so a new left-back is on the wishlist.

Ben Chilwell is thought to be a priority target but Leicester could demand as much as £80million for the England international - the same fee Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire last summer.

Alex Telles, Nicolas Tagliafico, Robin Gosens and Alex Sandro are all cheaper options, but will only arrive if a deal with the Foxes cannot be agreed.

Lampard has predominantly switched between a 4-3-3 formation and a 4-2-3-1 set-up during his first season at Stamford Bridge.

Jorginho, N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic are his undisputed first-choice selections in a three-man midfield, although the Blues are now spoilt for choice in that department.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is available after injury while Billy Gilmour enjoyed a stunning breakthrough before the coronavirus crisis and both Mount and Ross Barkley can also operate in a deeper role.

As for departures, Timeoue Bakayoko looks set to move on with Paris Saint-Germain prepared to pay £30m for the Frenchman but finding a buyer for Danny Drinkwater will be more difficult.

Hakim Ziyech is set to arrive this summer after agreeing a £33.4m move from Ajax in February, and the Moroccan will provide competition for Mount and Barkley if Lampard utilises a formation that requires a No 10.

Ziyech can also play out wide so his arrival will threaten the game time of Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic, who are both fit after being hampered by injury this season.

Willian and Pedro are both free agents this summer, although the former turned down a two-year extension, so Chelsea are on the hunt for another winger.

Jadon Sancho is top of their list but will cost £120m and the Borussia Dortmund ace is also wanted by Manchester United so Jesus Corona, Federico Chiesa or Federico Bernardeschi would be more affordable options.

Philippe Coutinho and Kai Havertz have also been touted as potential signings while the Blues also want a new striker to ease the goalscoring burden on Abraham.

Olivier Giroud has agreed a new 12-month deal to stay at the club but Michy Batshuayi is likely to be sold while Atletico Madrid are expected to activate their £48.5m option on Alvaro Morata.

Moussa Dembele had appeared to be favourite to join from Lyon and Lille frontman Victor Osimhen has also been linked but recent reports suggest Timo Werner is now in Lampard's sights - having previously been destined for Anfield.
