Leeds United are in serious contention to return to the Premier League
The EFL's decision to restart the Championship this month is an "absolute dream" for Leeds' hopes of returning to the Premier League, according to Alan Hutton. Marcelo Bielsa's side is edging closer and closer to securing their long-awaited return to the top-flight.
Leeds currently top the Championship table with 71 points, a solitary point ahead of second-placed West Brom.
Barring a monumental collapse, the Yorkshire club will be in contention for promotion come the end of the season.
Leeds' bid to return to the Premier League was in major doubt when the EFL were debating plans for the Championship season, which, according to reports, could've been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The EFL, however, have provisionally agreed to restart the season on June 20.
To actually put that to bed, finish the season and get promoted would be an absolute dream for everybody involved
The decision not to render the season null and void will be music to the ears of Leeds fans, who will be hoping Bielsa's troops will be able to continue their stellar form once the campaign resumes.
Hutton is delighted with the decision to restart the season and is looking forward to seeing if Leeds can make it back to the promised land.
The former Rangers and Tottenham defender told Football Insider: “The last few years it’s been difficult for them, they’ve went so far and then crumbled, if you want.
“To actually put that to bed, finish the season and get promoted would be an absolute dream for everybody involved.
"I think over the last few years they’ve actually been one of the best teams for such long periods, it’s been a shame not to see them go up.
“They’re a huge club and I think they deserve to be in the Premier League – it would be nice to see them actually finish it out on the pitch, hopefully they can do it this time.”
Leeds were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2003-04 season, in which they finished in 19th place.
Should they secure promotion back to the Premier League, former Tottenham ace Jamie O'Hara believes they'll be well-equipped to avoid an instant return to the Championship.
During a recent appearance on talkSPORT, O'Hara said: "They need to get promotion to keep Bielsa.
"If they do and Bielsa stays, then I think they could be a real force in the Premier League.
"They are ready for promotion."
