Liverpool survived a tenacious Red Bull Salzburg side in Austria to book their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League, topping Group E. Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah scored the goals as the Reds came out on top of a thrilling clash.

Salzburg were far from shy at getting at Liverpool inside the Red Bull Arena, first getting a shot away inside a minute.

A breathless first half saw both sides have opportunities, with nine shots on target - the most in a first half of a Champions League game without a goal since April 2011.

But 100 seconds of high quality from the Reds before the hour mark saw them put the Austrian champions to the sword, a well-worked move resulting in Naby Keita heading into an empty net after goalkeeper Cican Stankovic came off his line to close Sadio Mane.

Mohamed Salah, having earlier wasted a hat-trick of goalscoring chances, then scored from the tighest possible angle on the byline after Stankovic again came rushing off his line.

A succession more chances went amiss as Liverpool controlled the second half with a professional display. But how did Jurgen Klopp's charges perform individually as the European champions made sure they'll still be in the competition in 2020? Express Sport rates and slates the Merseyside outfit.

Liverpool player ratings vs Red Bull Salzburg - Champions League

Alisson - 7

Good save to deny Minamino inside first 10 minutes and came off his line to head clear soon after. Double stop to keep Hwang and Minamino at bay, as well as denying Haaland with his feet.

Trent Alexander-Arnold - 6

Volleyed over early on but sometimes caught out defensively. Lucky to see Haaland fire wide early in the second half. Then demonstrated what he's best at with a cross-field pass quickly becoming his trademark in the lead-up to the opening goal. Almost caught the keeper out with a free-kick, but only found the side-netting.

Dejan Lovren - 6

Great long ball in build-up to early Salah chance but followed by several wasted lofts forward. Struggled at times against Salzburg's pace and movement. Substituted off with injury, for the second game running, on 53 minutes and straight dow nthe .

Virgil van Dijk - 8

Plenty of physical battles with Haaland and some crucial challenges as the last man. Often there when his team needed him with the telling touch to prevent crosses into the box from leading to anything dangerous.

Andy Robertson - 7

Got forward regularly but the crosses he was able to make dealt with by Salzburg. Drilled a long-distance shot wide after half-time when he might've been wiser to pass to Mane, but then a good touch and pass for the first goal. Some key challenges at the other end, deflecting a Minamino shot over the bar.

Jordan Henderson - 8

Marshalled Liverpool's midfield excellently and often in the right place at the right time to break up Salzburg moves. Great pass to force Salah's goal, bending one into space before Salah found the net after Stankovic sought to close him down. Worked well alongside Keita.

Gini Wijnaldum - 6

Disappointing from the Dutchman who allowed Salzburg to ghost past him through the middle a number of times. Good intervention to prevent a Minamino shot second half. Had a late chance but snuffed out.

Naby Keita - 8

Cute and clever with the ball and might've had an assist when he fed Salah in the first half only for him to fire wide. Then delivered the opening goal by heading in Mane's cross, his second in as many matches. His vision and creativity, the reasons why Klopp signed him, clear to see and also dropped the shoulder to beat his man several times with some good bursts. Subbed off on 87.

Sadio Mane - 8

Curled just wide after eight minutes and Liverpool's most lively attacker - forcing a good save with another first-half attempt. Great pass into Salah for one second-half chance. Got the assist he deserved when he chipped into Keita and went close to scoring twice again in the last 10, seeing one saved and another deflected over. Booked for dissent.

Roberto Firmino - 5

Below his best in the first half, lacking sharpness with his touch and gifting the ball away multiple times. Improved somewhat second half but still not to his usual standards. Stabbed wide at an angle and then subbed off on 75 mins.

Mohamed Salah - 6

Long looked like it would be a wasteful night from the Egyptian, only for him to score a gorgeous goal. He dragged wide from Keita's pass in the first half before firing over from a Mane pass. Then should've done better when he tried to round Stankovic in goal. After that, delivered a reminder of his quality, with a finish from an almost impossible angle. Did well to create another chance on his own second half but effort too central, allowing keeper to parry. Still marked down for how many chances he needed to score, as dangerous as his presence was.

Substitutes

Joe Gomez - 6

On for the injured Lovren and helped keep Liverpool's first clean sheet on the continent this term.

James Milner - 6

Brought on to keep it steady and safe in the final 15. Did just that.

Divock Origi - N/A

Replaced Keita in the final stages.

Liverpool emerge as shock transfer suitors for Neymar with Kylian Mbappe stance explained

Liverpool emerge as shock transfer suitors for Neymar with Kylian Mbappe stance explained

Liverpool are among the clubs keen to sign Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar, according to shock reports from France. The Brazilian has grown tired with life in France and PSG are reportedly open to cutting their losses on the most-expensive player in their history.

The Reds already have a formidable attack, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all enjoying positive campaigns so far.

However, despite that, French newspaper Le Parisien claim that Liverpool are actively monitoring Neymar.

The PSG star spent the summer lusting for a return to former club Barcelona, who he'd left back in the summer of 2017.

But with the Catalan giants unable to afford Neymar, that gives Liverpool room for encouragement.

Jurgen Klopp's side are not the only team interested in signing the Brazil international, however.

Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Juventus are also keeping an open mind, while Barcelona's interest remains despite their financial situation.

Regarding Mbappe, the report claims that the Reds are also looking at bringing the France international to Anfield.

But that could be easier said than done.

PSG value Mbappe more than Neymar and it's thought that, if they had to sell one of the duo, it would be the Brazilian packing his bags.

Real Madrid also have strong interest in World Cup winner Mbappe, who has scored seven goals from 10 Ligue 1 appearances so far this season.

Meanwhile, speaking recently, Klopp admitted he may look to sign a striker when the transfer window reopens.

"Yes, we have to see," he said when asked if he'd maybe strengthen his squad.

"We can't just give the boys [away] on loan because we have built this squad.

"We have three long-term injuries and four with Paul Glatzel, two of them were pre-season. Two came later with Joel [Matip] and Fabinho.

{%=o.title%}

"That gives us a 16-player squad and I count the kids, but we cannot only give players on loan and think it is good for him, we always have to consider both situations, the boys' and ours.

"And in the end, we try to make the perfect solution. Sometimes it works out, others it does not."

PSG are likely to demand over £200m each for Mbappe and Neymar.

But whether Liverpool can afford such a high transfer fee is something only time will tell.

Erling Haaland loses temper in Liverpool loss as Man Utd official watches transfer target

Erling Haaland loses temper in Liverpool loss as Man Utd official watches transfer target

Erling Braut Haaland lost his temper during Liverpool's 2-0 win over Red Bull Salzburg at the Red Bull Arena as he slammed his water bottle down to the pitch as Manchester United's scout watched him in action. Goals by Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah sent the Reds through to the Champions League's last 16 whereas Salzburg will continue in the Europa League after finishing third in Group E behind Napoli.

Haaland didn't take it well when Salah doubled the visitors' lead with an impressive shot from a tight angle and ended the Austrian champions dream of making it through to the play-offs.

The striker asked for a water bottle from the bench and after taking a few sips he slammed it to the floor in anger.

United sent head of global scouting Marcel Bout to watch the decisive match from the stands as the Manchester giants are big admirers of the Norway international.

And that angry moment is not likely to affect the Red Devils' interest in the slightest as Haaland has been in incredible form this season.

Haaland has scored a staggering 28 goals in 21 matches for Salzburg in this campaign and also hit the target eight times in all six of his team's games in the Champions League's group stage.

The Norwegian scored in all of the Austrian side's matches in the competition bar tonight's loss to Liverpool in Salzburg.

The 19-year-old's incredible goalscoring form has attracted plenty of interest from Europe's heavy hitters, such as Arsenal, Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and of course United.

The Red Devils struggled for goals at the start of the campaign and even though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turned a corner recently they appear to still be interested in Haaland.

The young centre-forward has praised Solskjaer as a player and a manager, as he learned a lot under his guidance at Molde.

He also hinted that he would be interested to move to the Premier League as he is a big fan of English football having watched his father Alfe-Inge in action for the likes of Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Manchester City.

Haaland said: "He [Solskjaer] has had a huge impact on my life, both as a person and as a trainer.

“He won the Champions League and was an incredibly good player. He has taught me a lot.

{%=o.title%}

“I have dreamed of playing for the best clubs in the world my whole life, and I especially like English football.”

Salzburg lost to Liverpool for the second time in the group stage following a stunning 4-3 result at Anfield in October.

The Austrians came close to upseting Jurgen Klopp's side with goals by Hee-Chan Hwan, Takumi Minamino and of course Haaland.

But Sadio Mane and Andy Robertson's strikes, combined with Salah's brace, gave the reigning Champions League winners the victory.

Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool: PSG star demands Lionel Messi status amid transfer speculation

Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool: PSG star demands Lionel Messi status amid transfer speculation

Kylian Mbappe is unhappy at Paris Saint-Germain and the treatment he is receiving from boss Thomas Tuchel, according to reports. The France star has been substituted in both of the last two games for his club and has not reacted well.

The 20-year-old is one of the most sensational youngsters in Europe and has been linked with a big-money move to Liverpool or Real Madrid.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claim Mbappe is not happy at PSG and believes he should be treated like Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

The World Cup winner is said to be upset by the way Tuchel has substituted him and believes he is not views in the correct way by the manager.

The report claims the PSG boss is trying to teach Mbappe not to fall into the same problems Neymar has since moving to the French champions from Barcelona.

Tuchel is also said to think the striker has a lot to learn and will not play him on reputation alone.

Mbappe has netted 12 goals and provided five assists in 15 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

But that has not made him the first name on the team sheet in Tuchel’s eyes at Parc des Princes.

Leonardo, PSG’s sporting director is concerned by the disintegration of the relationship between Mbappe and his manager.

The Brazilian believes neither will be able to co-exist in the long-term leaving him with a difficult decision to make.

With the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool both eyeing Mbappe, PSG could be tempted to cash-in but the French champions also have a track record of sacking managers.

Tuchel has opened up on Mbappe’s reaction to being substituted in the 3-1 win against Montpellier.

“He has a specific mindset. When you win titles and have talent like him, you don’t like to be substituted but he must accept my choices, it is necessary to show respect to the player who comes on,” Tuchel said.

“I’m not taking it personally.”

PSG have already ensured top spot in their Champions League group which means Tuchel can look to rest some key players.

{%=o.title%}

“I don’t want to take risks,” he explained.

Reports have also emerged today that Mbappe has no plans to sign a new contract at PSG.

That could put the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid in a strong position although they would have to pay an astronomical fee to complete any transfer.
