Manchester United and Chelsea transfer target Erling Haaland will “soon” leave Red Bull Salzburg, according to former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman. Haaland has been linked with a host of Europe’s top clubs following a stunning start to the season in front of goal. The striker had scored 28 goals in 21 appearances this season ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Liverpool.

McManaman admits signing the 19-year-old would be a gamble but says his goal record this term will not be ignored.

“No doubt he will be moving soon,” McManaman told BT Sport.

“You don’t like to say that, to leave a team like this. But 28 goals in 21 games for a 19-year-old, and his interest around Europe is prolific now.

“So you can imagine someone taking him soon, someone having a gamble on him.”

Norwegian Haaland only joined Salzburg from Molde in January, signing a five-year contract.

But his stock has risen incredibly during his time in the Austrian top flight.

Former England striker Michael Owen admits he initially ignored Haaland’s stats at domestic level.

But Owen says now the forward has replicated that form in the Champions League, with eight goals to date in his first five matches, there is no doubt his form should be recognised.

“At the start you do ignore it don’t you,” Owen said.

“You think ‘Austrian league, can I take this seriously?’, and I was like that.

“But now, he’s scored in all five Champions League games against proper opposition, Napoli twice, Liverpool for starters.

“Someone that does that, then you’ve got to sit up and take notice. Does that mean he’s going to be worth £50million?

“Well someone’s probably going to take the risk, because at the minute it probably is still a risk.

“You just don’t know what he’s going to be like playing consistently against the top boys. But so far, so good. His stats are quite staggering.

“Just trying to see whether or judge whether he is going to be a top-class player in the future at a higher level is difficult.

“But one thing you do know is you can translate goals at any level. Whether you get as many, but that instinct, you can’t teach an instinct.

“He’s got the instinct to be in the right place at the right time.

"So straight away, whatever he does, he’s got that instinct to score goals.”

Former Derby, Portsmouth and Oxford United manager Jim Smith has died aged 79. The football manager was known as the 'Bald Eagle' and enjoyed a good career across eight different clubs in various leagues.

A League Cup final appearance with QPR in 1986 and promotion to the Premier League with Derby in 1996 were his career highlights.

"Our thoughts are with Jim's family," said QPR in a statement.

Smith's playing career was largely in the lower leagues but he left his mark when he became a manager down the line.

He was always a strong motivator of players, very direct and helped several big names make it in the game.

John Aldridge and Darren Anderton are just two names that went on to secure big moved after working with Smith and made the most of their footballing talents.

"I have so many fond memories of Jim as a football manager but foremost as a friend," said League Managers Association chairman Howard Wilkinson.

"Jim and I have known each other since our teenage years, and I have been in his debt since the day he asked me to become player-coach at Boston United where I served my apprenticeship.

"He was intelligent, passionate, determined, honest and always great fun to be with. Never one to mince his words, he was a leader in the truest sense."

He was known for getting teams promoted as well.

Colchester United and Birmingham both climbed divisions under Smith before he transformed Oxford into a top-flight side.

Smith did struggle when he was given an opporutnity at Newcastle but he made up for it when he guided second-tier Portsmouth to an FA Cup semi-final in 1992.

He would later miss out on promotion through the play-offs with Pompey though.

Derby was to be his last big managerial job where he helped the Rams into the Premier League.

After that he had assistant manager spells at Coventry City, Portsmouth and Southampton, before a return to Oxford.

That would be where he would finish his 38-year career in football.

Owen explains why he’s not ‘excited’ by Man Utd target Haaland

Owen explains why he’s not ‘excited’ by Man Utd target Haaland

Michael Owen insists he is not “excited” by Manchester United target Erling Braut Haaland and questions whether the in-demand striker has what it takes “to go to the very top”.

The 19-year-old has put top European clubs on alert with 28 goals in just 21 games so far this season, including finding the net in all five Champions League group games.

He has been tipped to reunite with former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United – who managed him at Molde – whilst Liverpool are also said to be keeping tabs on the Norwegian.

But ex-England striker Owen has questioned whether Haaland has the star quality to warrant the hype he has received.

Speaking on BT Sport ahead of the game, Owen said: “He doesn’t get you off your seat, put it that way.

“He does in that way (scoring goals) and that’s absolutely fine. Do you know what, many a player have made great careers out of just scoring goals and that’s absolutely fine.

“But what I’m saying is, are we talking about someone who is going to go to the very top? It’s very hard to see that.

“He’s 19, he’s doing unbelievable for his age, but when you look at the great players, they do things that no-one else can.

“They’re either great dribblers or lightening quick or something.

“I don’t watch him and get excited. I’m not desperate to see him tonight, put it that way, but his stats just make you respect what he’s doing at the moment.

“I’m probably being harsh, he’s 19, but he’s got a long way to go to match the numbers that he’s scoring at the moment.”

Erling Haaland to Man Utd: United's head scout watched Haaland against Liverpool on Tuesday (Image: DAILY EXPRESS)

Manchester United sent their head of scouting Marcel Bout to watch January transfer target Erling Haaland play against Liverpool on Tuesday. Norway sensation Haaland started for Red Bull Salzburg in their crucial Champions League match versus Jurgen Klopp’s side. Haaland, 19, is a target of a number of Europe’s top clubs after a stunning start to the season.

Haaland had scored 28 goals in his first 21 matches in all competitions this term before the visit of Liverpool.

United have been heavily linked with the teenager’s signature as they look to bolster their attack.

And BT Sport commentator Ian Darke claimed during the Salzburg-Liverpool match that United scout Bout was in attendance to watch Haaland.

“We hear that Haaland is being watched here tonight by Manchester United’s head of scouting,” Darke said.

“A lot of rumours linking him with a January move to Old Trafford.

“Of course he played for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for Molde and got 20 goals in 50 appearances.

“But he was even younger of course than he is now.”
