Manchester City star Raheem Sterling has warned Premier League title rivals Liverpool that they will keep silently working on closing the gap at the top of the table. City, who will take on rivals Manchester United on the first Manchester derby of the season at the Etihad, are third in the table with 11 points adrift of the undefeated Reds who are likely to end their 30-year wait for a league title.

They’ve had a good run of form, they’re hungry to win their first title, I’m not saying we’re not hungry, but we know how strong the league is

However, the Citizens have overturned large deficits before and Sterling is confident that history will repeat itself as Pep Guardiola’s men are dedicated on catching the Merseysiders at the top.

The England international predicts a long season ahead and insists the team is ignoring all the talk suggesting that they are “down and out”.

That us why he is confident that City will ultimately manage to overcome his former team.

Sterling told Football Focus: "They’ve had a good run of form, they’re hungry to win their first title, I’m not saying we’re not hungry, but we know how strong the league is.

"Each team every year is becoming more of a threat and I’m confident that it will be a long season and a very interesting one.

"It’s football. At moments in time it looks like you’re down and out but we work in silence and keep working and keep chipping away.

“Ok, they’re far ahead but we’ll let it pan out and that’s all we can do. Win our games and focus on that."

Sterling added: “We’re always fighting against each other to be the number one team in the city.

"That’s always a great thing to do. Both teams have great players and great managers; I think this weekend we’ll show nothing less.

“Playing against United is always difficult and we know it’ll be a tough game.”

Sterling has been in top form this season as he has scored a total of 15 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions.

The former Liverpool star has been particularly impressive in the Champions League where he has netted five goals in as many games.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring for the Reds, latching on to Jordan Henderson’s long pass to slot beyond Aaron Ramsdale.

A spectator in the first half, despite the Cherries going close a couple of times, but kept his concentration to comfortably deny Ryan Fraser after the break.

RB: Joe Gomez – 7

Picked out Salah with a decent cross in the opening minutes and found the Egyptian again midway through the second half as he got forward well.

Went in the book for pulling down Dominic Solanke but did his defensive duties admirably, including a strong block from Fraser.

CB: Dejan Lovren – 5

Withdrawn just before half-time, sparking fears of another injury for the Reds.

Went straight to the bench so fans will hope his substitution was merely precautionary.

CB: Virgil van Dijk – 9

Absolutely dominant, with the Dutchman winning everything in the air and taking no chances with a host of emphatic blocks and clearances.

Last-ditch tackle on Solanke was the highlight of an excellent afternoon.

LB: Andrew Robertson – 6

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reason to be confident for Man City clash

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reason to be confident for Man City clash

Manchester United go up against Manchester City with few giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side any chance of picking up all three points. Looking at the teams beforehand, that's understandable.

Manchester United's team is severely lacking in quality when you compare it to the Manchester City side they'll be going up against tonight.

Anthony Martial is no Sergio Aguero, Fred is no Kevin De Bruyne and Daniel James is no Raheem Sterling.

City may have suffered a dip in form in recent times to put their Premier League title assault under threat but they're expected to win today.

Pep Guardiola has only lost one Manchester derby since he took the job in 2016 - a 3-2 defeat back in April 2018 when the Premier League title was in the bag.

But United should take spirit from their away form under Solskjaer when it comes to facing the biggest and best teams in the division.

Solskjaer hasn't always got everything right. That's why his side are looking uncomfortably up at their noisy neighbours, rather than down.

But United have a knack of winning when the odds are stacked against them.

Take Tottenham on Wednesday for example. Sure, they had the home comforts of Old Trafford. But Tottenham, under Jose Mourinho, had won their previous three matches.

United hadn't. They'd slumped to draws against Sheffield United and Aston Villa either side of a 1-0 defeat to Astana on a cold Thursday night in Kazakhstan.

But they got the result they needed. Marcus Rashford - who starts against City today as the only player Guardiola would have from the red side of Manchester - was unplayable with a majestic brace.

It's been the story of Solskjaer's reign: when the mood takes them, this Red Devils side is capable of upping the ante.

They beat Tottenham 1-0 on the road last season, with Rashford the hero. At the time, Tottenham were strong favourites having been soaring under Mauricio Pochettino.

United have beaten Chelsea three times under Solskjaer, twice away from home. The 2-0 win in the FA Cup last term was a marvellous display where both Rashford and Paul Pogba caused havoc.

There was, of course, the 3-1 FA Cup victory away at Arsenal where even Alexis Sanchez, who couldn't score for all the money in the world, was on target.

{%=o.title%}

And United also beat PSG last term 3-1 in the Champions League with Rashford the hero from the penalty spot.

That is why, despite City having arguably the strongest XI in the top flight, Solskjaer will be confident of his side getting the job done.

United are nowhere near the level of Guardiola's side. Their system, players and hierarchy are dwarfed in comparison to their noisy neighbours.

But they may just spring a surprise. Solskjaer, certainly, is counting on it.

Niko Kovac sent heads spinning this afternoon while taking in Everton’s win over Chelsea. The German was recently axed by Bayern Munich and could now be in the running for the Everton job.

Everton sacked Marco Silva on Thursday and are looking for a new boss.

Caretaker Duncan Ferguson helped them to their first home win since October, but is unlikely to get much longer in the hot seat.

David Moyes and Vitor Pereira are the favourites for the job but Kovac’s presence in the stands could change things.

However, according to Goal, the former Bayern boss has distanced himself from the job and is looking to take some time out of football and will watch a handful of Premier League games over the next few weeks.

Kovac was axed by Bayern at the start of November after a poor run despite winning the title in his first season with the club.

And Everton axed Silva after dropping into the relegation zone following the defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.

Today’s win over Chelsea has seem them jump up to 14th but they still remain under threat.

Ferguson was delighted with the three points, but knows he is unlikely to be around too long.

“It was an unbelievable atmosphere for myself but it's the players who need to take the pride and the praise,” he said.

“We were just trying to get the communication working.

"I thought they were fantastic; we really got the players working well together. To get the early goal was really important.

“When you are leading a team and the fans need you to get three points, it is so much more important than anything else."

{%=o.title%}

And Theo Walcott revealed what Ferguson had said to the players before the match.

"Duncan has come in and the club is his heart,” Walcott said on BT Sport.

“That was the Everton way, we play for each other and Dominic was immense. We wanted intensity and pressure and to get in behind them.

“We put them under pressure and made them make mistakes. Duncan said go out and play your game and enjoy it.

“As much as it sounds a cliche, that is what we did.”
