Everton caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson says it is not "realistic" to expect to take the job permanently.

The 47-year-old, who made 239 league appearances for Everton in his playing career, scoring 60 goals, is filling in following Marco Silva's sacking.

"I think the club will find a really top manager to come," he said.

"It is a dream of mine to be the Everton manager, but let's be realistic."

The Scot, who has not managed a senior side before, added that he was not looking beyond the home match against Chelsea at lunchtime on Saturday.

"That is all my remit is, to get a result tomorrow [Saturday]," said Ferguson.

"This is a fantastic club. Who wouldn't want to be Everton manager? I'm sure there will be many, many top managers up for this job.

"We have plenty of time in the league, plenty of games ahead of us. There are not many points to mid-table so if we can string a few results together I am sure we can start climbing the table."

Phil Foden has long since got used to the background noise of opinions about his career. His tactic to date has been to ignore it, keep his head down and make the best use of the minutes he gets in a blue shirt.

But ahead of this weekend's Manchester derby against Manchester United, the teenager has laid out an ambitious vision both at Manchester City and with England.

And while he says he will be sad to see his hero go, he believes the departure of David Silva from the club next summer can give him the platform to achieve all of them.

“I want to play in the derby, in a Champions League Final in Istanbul – which I believe we can. I want to play for City in big games and I want to play for England.” he said.

“I am excited for the future so hopefully I will play regularly next year. I am so excited to see where that goes.”

Foden’s star burst into the firmament in 2017 winning the U17 World Cup with England and the Golden Ball as player of the tournament.

Chances with Pep Guardiola's City since have been limited not by talent but by the quality in front of him - so much so that some voices have suggested he leaves the club either on loan or permanently.

Such suggestions meet with a shake of the head from the teenager and an insistence that, at City, he is not only at the club he loves but getting the best education a footballer could wish for.

“I remember thinking when I made the step up from the academy on the first day of training (with the first team) I was thinking ‘How am I going to handle this?’” he says.

“But I fitted in quite quickly and training with such great players every day makes you better.

“It is not what these players ‘teach’ you, it is just watching them in training and playing against the likes of Silva.

“You have to (absorb) the things he’s done really well and make sure you take something from it every day.

“I am learning from him all the time. He amazes me all the time in training still. For instance I’m amazed he is so strong for a little guy and defends really well.”

Foden has been part of the fabric at Manchester City since being identified by youth coach Terry John on a scouting trip to his primary school – his report to the academy being he had seen a kid with “potential”.

Foden was four years old at the time.

Fifteen years later that judgement still holds but there is no doubting he believes the time to fulfil has arrived.

He adds: “Sometimes I do get sick of people saying ‘he’s only young’ and sometimes (when not picked) I show respect because this is my boyhood club and I understand where the manager is coming from.

“But I believe that I can play in big games.”

Raheem Sterling has no doubts he can cut it and has said he should be on Gareth Southgate’s radar – a comment which saw the England manager admit it was a case of “when rather than if, unless something goes wildly off-track for him”.

That would seem unlikely for the down-to-earth Foden but he concedes that waiting for things to happen for him is not an option.

He has to force the issue.

“I would obviously like to be in the England squad sooner rather than later but I can understand Gareth saying I haven’t played enough minutes,” Foden continues.

“But look, I am excited for the future. I just need to take the minutes I get, show it on the pitch and in training and impress the manager, and hopefully I can get there soon.”

Foden’s experience of derby combat to date is not extensive, amounting to two minutes in November last year as a 92nd minute replacement for man of the match Silva.

Next season he hopes to replace him permanently but that does not mean he cannot make an impact sooner rather than later.

Chelsea have put England striker Jadon Sancho at the top of their January shopping list after their transfer ban was reduced on Friday. Manager Frank Lampard straight away pledged that he is ready to start spending the £150million that the club have in their transfer kitty after not spending last summer, and selling Eden Hazard for £88m to Real Madrid.

But though Chelsea have made contact with Borussia Dortmund about England striker Sancho, 19, they have told the Bundesliga club they will not be held to ransom over the fee – and will not pay the £100m the German club want.

Chelsea have other targets now they are free to spend after the decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Friday to reduce the FIFA ban from two windows to one, which they served last summer.

Also on Lampard’s wishlist are Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha, Leicester defender Ben Chilwell, Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake, RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, CSKA Moscow forward Fedor Chalov and Lyon’s Moussa Dembele – as well as Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech.

Lampard said: “I have a few ideas of players in mind.

“It is all about how I can improve the squad. Now we know what we can do, starting today conversations can be had. I will put forward my case of what I think will improve us, and hopefully we will make the move from there.

“Every big team buys. Look at what Manchester United and City, Tottenham and Arsenal have spent. We have managed to utilise the hard work that has gone into the academy over the years and that's great to see. But we still want to improve.”

But, he pledged: “The young players won't lose their opportunities - because they are here to stay. If you think we're going to line up Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Reece James and sell them, we're not. They're here to stay. Anything we do now will be to improve that base.”

However, France striker Olivier Giroud is now expected be one of those offloaded in January, along with possibly midfielder Ross Barkley.

In a statement, Chelsea were strongly critical of FIFA for imposing their two-window transfer ban in the first place - declaring the governing body's approach to the case "deeply unsatisfactory".

The Blues claim FIFA "chose to treat Chelsea entirely differently to Manchester City for reasons that make absolutely no sense to Chelsea".

They also added: "Chelsea respects the importance of the work undertaken by FIFA in relation to the protection of minors and has fully cooperated with FIFA throughout its investigation.

"However, if FIFA continues to impose inconsistent and unequal sanctions on clubs then it will not only undermine the very purpose of the regulations, but it will also bring into doubt the game’s confidence in FIFA being able to appropriately regulate this important area."

Reacting to the news that their ban had been lifted shortly after the announcement, Lampard told a press conference: "It allows the potential to look at the market going forward and so I am pleased from a footballing level.

"It is not my business to get involved in the legal side of it. I see it purely on a football level and from my point of view and for the club moving forward, it is obviously a good thing.

"The club have been working away putting forward our case and I have been working away trying to get us doing okay on the pitch, and now it is a discussion we can start taking up.

"I am certainly not going to sit here today and go too far down any lines to do with that [who the transfer targets might be] and I am happy with the squad that I have here. We are doing okay.

"The reason people have given us a lot of credit this season is probably because they expected less of us and we have to give credit to the group that is working now to get to where we got to.

"I still want more. I think we could have more points and be higher up the table.

"As we go forward and I feel or we feel as a club that there are positions we could strengthen, then we will obviously look at that, as all big clubs do.

"That is why people expected less of us this season because lots of clubs around us and below us were spending £100m or £150m and we did not have that chance, and we lost Eden Hazard and we lost two No 9s.

"Now the picture has slightly changed and it is important we get it right moving forward."
