Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp needs to exercise some caution if he doesn’t want to see Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘burn out’.

Karl Robinson, who is now the boss at Oxford United, has warned the former Borussia Dortmund boss what could happen to his defender if he makes too many appearances across a short space of time, using Dele Alli as an example.

The Tottenham midfielder has struggled to recapture the form that made him so special at the beginning of his career, only managing 9 goals in his last 47 appearances.

Alexander-Arnold has already made 17 appearances during the 2019/20 campaign, and is at risk of being worked too hard.

Robinson told the Blood Red Podcast: “I think to succeed at that level you’ve got to be single-minded.

“At certain times you’ve got to have an attitude or arrogance in some ways.

“That's not a bad arrogance, it’s a good arrogance that you need to cope and play at the top level.

“Obviously Dele is going through a bit more of a difficult time at his moment but he’s someone who’s only 23 and has played nearly 300 games at the top level.

“The one thing I do worry about for Trent, and for Dele and for all the young English players is we’re getting so money driven.

“These players are playing far too much for their age. It’s scary how much football they are actually playing.”

He added: “The problem is the better they become and the better they play the more people want to see them and the more they become a commodity and the more that’s the case it will affect their game and it’s not their fault.

“They’re only obliging to contracts people are signing for them.”

As well as facing a huge pile-up of fixtures over the Christmas period, Klopp is adamant that Alexander-Arnold has an extra burden that doesn’t affect his team-mates.

He said: “Trent has a mix of personal education, football education, character, skills, attitude, mentality, and he is on top of all that.

“He is absolutely a scouser in the best understanding.

“It’s a big task and a big job to be a scouser as a Liverpool player because you are responsible for pretty much everything. So he has all the good things.”

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will be hoping that their transfer ban will be overturned in time for him to make an impact in the January transfer window.

The Blues have had a magnificent run of form in the Premier League since losing 4-0 to Manchester United on the opening day, and now sit level on points with second-place Leicester City after 12 fixtures.

Despite their young squad impressing, Lampard will have areas of their game that need some support, having suffered several injury problems so far this term.

Express Sport have picked out three possible deals Chelsea could target if The Court of Arbitration for Sport agree to end their ban just after the half-way stage.

Ben Chilwell

Chilwell has been linked with Chelsea since last summer despite their ongoing transfer ban.

The 22-year-old has been a regular for Leicester since the start of 2017, but could fancy a move to Chelsea with the attraction of Champions League football.

Express Sport understands Chelsea are interested in signing the Leicester full-back once their transfer ban ends.

In a possible transfer hint, Lampard was spotted to have ‘liked’ Chilwell’s recent Instagram post showcasing his man of the match award from England’s 7-0 win over Montenegro.

Callum Wilson

Wilson has also been linked with the Blues for the past few transfer windows, coming close to a £50million move last January.

The Bournemouth forward has scored 19 Premier League goals since the start of last season, and is now a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England squads.

Wilson could also be chosen as a replacement for the unsettled Olivier Giroud, who is said to be nearing a winter move to Inter Milan.

Nathan Ake

Another Bournemouth player make our list in the form of former Chelsea defender Nathan Ake.

The Netherlands international, 24, left Stamford Bridge back in 2017 after struggling for first-team opportunities, but it seems that the Blues had planned for his future development.

Reports suggest that Ake had a £40m buy-back clause inserted into the £20m transfer, which could see Chelsea find their perfect partner to Fikayo Tomori.

Liverpool have forged an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table after a near-perfect start to the new season, but that doesn’t mean they are without any weaknesses.

Jurgen Klopp has been open about his frustration toward his side’s build up of fixtures throughout December, which includes two matches in the space of just 24 hours - but recently ruled out any chance of signing Kylian Mbappe.

John Henry and Tom Werner are likely to be willing to open their cheque books in order to help their German boss achieve domestically and in Europe, and there are plenty of possibilities.

Express Sport have picked out three players that the Reds could bring in during the winter to help them in their pursuit to win a first league title since 1990.

Lorenzo Insigne

Napoli captain Insigne has been linked with the exit door Serie A side due to a rift between the players and President Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Carlo Ancelotti could see several key players leave in January, and none would be missed more than the Napoli-born 28-year-old.

Liverpool could utilise Insigne to give Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane some much-needed rest over winter, and could provide a fine replacement should one of their respected trio leave in the summer.

The Italy international has netted at least 13 times in each of his last four full seasons, and could be available on a cut-price deal.

Harry Wilson

A cheaper option for Klopp and his bosses would be to recall Wilson from Bournemouth.

The 22-year-old has impressed since joining the Cherries on loan in the summer, and could provide the perfect back-up for their front line amid Xherdan Shaqiri’s apparent discontent.

Wilson netted Wales’ second goal against Azerbaijan on Saturday to once again showcase his talent to Reds fans, having added four Premier League goals in just 11 outings.

The starlet recent revealed that Klopp has sent him messages of support through the ongoing season, which could be a hint toward his future at Anfield.

Timo Werner

RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner would be the closest Liverpool could get to guaranteed goals.

The German forward has netted 15 times in his sixteen appearances so far this season, taking his Bundesliga tally to 61 goals in just over three seasons.

According to German outlet Kicker, Werner’s current contract includes a release clause of just £25million.

The 23-year-old could be tempted to leave the side he joined from Stuttgart in 2016 if the reigning Champions League winners come calling, with a Premier League winners medal a strong possibility.

Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho cost Manchester United £20m by demanding the club pay no more than £50m for Harry Maguire.

Mourinho was desperate to land the Leicester defender while in charge at Old Trafford but instructed his board that £50m was the limit - and paying any more would in fact embarrass him.

At the time Leicester wanted £60m for the England international. United would eventually pay £80m to get him 12 months later.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the man who gets to use Maguire now, but Mourinho may wonder if things would have been different if he’d have swallowed his pride and paid the £60m back then.

A club insider told the Sunday Mirror: “A move was made for Maguire in the summer of 2018 – with Jose Mourinho’s blessing.

“But Jose’s interest in signing the player came with a proviso. He said that while Maguire was an excellent player, he wasn’t worth more than £50million.

“In fact, he said paying more than £50million would embarrass him.

“The club was armed with that valuation when they spoke to Leicester – who immediately made it clear they would not sell Maguire for less than £60million.

“The deal was dead before United had even made a formal bid – and when it was decided to move for Maguire again a year later, his price had gone up to £80million.”

Mourinho was then sacked four months into the new season with United struggling and rifts in the dressing room growing.

Solskjaer took over as caretaker before getting the job on a permanent basis, but the struggles at Old Trafford are back.

Maguire has been decent if not spectacular for United since arriving from Leicester, but with United in seventh things have been tough.

Maguire has even worn the captain’s armband and could be the long-term skipper of a side with few leaders.
