Arsenal vs Tottenham

Arsenal and Tottenham are competing to sign Napoli star Dries Mertens.

That’s according to Italian publication Il Mattino, who claim the Premier League duo have registered their interest in the 32-year-old.

Mertens’ contract expires in June 2020 and he’ll be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside of Italy in January.

Juventus, AC Milan and Inter have also been linked with the Belgian international.

Arsene’s back

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been appointed as FIFA's new chief of global football development, with the Frenchman set to oversee the growth of the sport plus technical matters.

The 70-year-old was recently linked with the Bayern Munich job following the sacking of Niko Kovac but said that while he was approached he was never a candidate for the job.

Wenger will be the leading authority on technical matters on FIFA's Football and Technical Advisory Panels involved in the International Football Association Board (IFAB) review and decision-making process on potential changes to the game's laws.

He will also be the chair of a technical study group.

"I look forward to taking on this important challenge, not only because I have always been interested in analysing football from a broader perspective but also because FIFA's mission... is truly global," Wenger said in the FIFA statement.

Manchester City will not be appealing Bernardo Silva’s one-match ban for his controversial tweet involving Benjamin Mendy - though they are furious at the player's punishment, according to The Mirror.

The FA have slapped the Portugal star with the ban alongside a £50,000 fine, which will see him miss the Premier League visit of Chelsea a week on Saturday.

Silva, 25, has also been ordered to undertake an education programme after pleading guilty to an FA charge of misconduct.

The post in question was deleted just 46 minutes after it was published, with a follow-up post reading: "Can't even joke with a friend these days."

The FA statement read: "Bernardo Silva has been suspended for one first team competitive fixture, fined £50,000 and must complete face-to-face education after admitting a breach of FA Rule E3.

"The Manchester City midfielder’s social media activity on 22 September 2019 breached FA Rule E3(1.

“As it was insulting and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute, and constituted an “Aggravated Breach”, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it included reference, whether expressed or implied, to race and/or colour and/or ethnic origin."

Pep Guardiola had previously defended his player his actions, but understood why some viewers would have been left offended.

He claimed that Silva and Mendy are very close, and that the tweet was nothing more than a joke.

“If someone is offended, I can understand it,” he said.

“Bernardo is maybe going to take a lesson and it won’t happen again.

“I know the intention of Bernardo. It was just a joke.

“Benjamin is like a brother to Bernardo.

“It is the same the other way. It is what I see every day in training.”

City are set to take on Chelsea after a disappointing defeat at Anfield last weekend left them eight points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table, with Jurgen Klopp hoping to stop his rivals from winning a third consecutive title.

An England player will have leaked the story about the bust-up between Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez, claims former Three Lions defender Joleon Lescott.

Sterling clashed with Gomez when the pair met up for England duty on Monday.

The incident came a day after Gomez helped Liverpool beat Sterling’s Manchester City in a huge match in the Premier League title race.

News of the incident broke on Monday evening before England or manager Gareth Southgate had made a statement.

It’s got to be one of the players and that’s disappointing to think that one of your peers and one of your squad members are leaking this kind of story

And Lescott says it must have been one of the duo’s team-mates who leaked the story.

“That’s more disappointing, the fact that the detail of the story is getting out before anyone’s kind of made a statement,” Lescott said on The Debate.

“The fact that the people in the squad, because I doubt there’s catering staff being able to kind of find connections to the media links in order to get this story out, so it’s got to be one of the players and that’s disappointing to think that one of your peers and one of your squad members are leaking this kind of story with so much detail.”

Sterling has remained with the England squad but will not be considered for selection by Southgate for Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro.

Manchster City star Sterling issued the following statement on his Instagram account about the incident with Gomez.

"First and foremost everyone knows what that game means to me!" Sterling wrote.

"Everyone knows that I am not that way inclined and more to the point.

"Both Joe and I have had words and figured things out and moved on.

"We are in a sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me.

"We move this is why we play this sport because of our love for it.

"Me and @joegomez5 are good we both understand it was a 5-10 second thing it's done we move forward and not make this bigger than it is.

"Let's get focus on our game on Thursday."
