Joleon Lescott says an England player would have leaked the Raheem Sterling, Joe Gomez story
An England player will have leaked the story about the bust-up between Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez, claims former Three Lions defender Joleon Lescott.
Sterling clashed with Gomez when the pair met up for England duty on Monday.
The incident came a day after Gomez helped Liverpool beat Sterling’s Manchester City in a huge match in the Premier League title race.
News of the incident broke on Monday evening before England or manager Gareth Southgate had made a statement.
It’s got to be one of the players and that’s disappointing to think that one of your peers and one of your squad members are leaking this kind of story
And Lescott says it must have been one of the duo’s team-mates who leaked the story.
“That’s more disappointing, the fact that the detail of the story is getting out before anyone’s kind of made a statement,” Lescott said on The Debate.
“The fact that the people in the squad, because I doubt there’s catering staff being able to kind of find connections to the media links in order to get this story out, so it’s got to be one of the players and that’s disappointing to think that one of your peers and one of your squad members are leaking this kind of story with so much detail.”
Sterling has remained with the England squad but will not be considered for selection by Southgate for Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro.
Manchster City star Sterling issued the following statement on his Instagram account about the incident with Gomez.
"First and foremost everyone knows what that game means to me!" Sterling wrote.
"Everyone knows that I am not that way inclined and more to the point.
"Both Joe and I have had words and figured things out and moved on.
"We are in a sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me.
"We move this is why we play this sport because of our love for it.
"Me and @joegomez5 are good we both understand it was a 5-10 second thing it's done we move forward and not make this bigger than it is.
"Let's get focus on our game on Thursday."
