Celtic beat Lazio 2-1 on Thursday to confirm their place in the knock-out stages, as Rangers battle Feyenoord, Young Boys and Porto for a spot in the next round.

The Hoops are also on top in the Premiership table after 11 fixtures, edging out their Old Firm rivals on goal difference with both sides on 28 points apiece.

Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan has given his thoughts on the domestic battle, and discussed why Neil Lennon’s men have earned an early advantage despite sitting on level pegging.

Whelan told Football Insider: “When you look at the Premiership and how close it is, separated by one goal on goal difference, it gives them [Celtic] that breathing space.

“They don’t need to go and qualify, they’ve already done it, now they can concentrate on the league.

“On the other hand Steven Gerrard – three points ahead of Feyenoord, having to go over there in the next game – still has a lot of work to do and that can put the pressure on the players

“Games are important and that can take a lot out of you as a football player, that concentration level.

“Knowing you need to go to the next team below you, if you can get a point, fantastic, but you’ve got to say in Premiership terms and in title predicament, it’s fallen better for Celtic – they’ve done their job already.

“They’re there already, they can now concentrate on the Premiership games whereas Rangers have one eye on European qualification and on the Premiership.”

Celtic hero Chris Sutton has also given his thoughts on the Bhoys' European exploits, and even claimed that former manager Brendan Rodgers will be jealous of the win in Italy.

Sutton told the Daily Record: “Neil Lennon surely shut up the last of his doubters in Rome.

“As I left the Stadio Olimpico after Celtic’s stunning win over Lazio, I couldn’t help but wonder what those who were whining about the club apparently going backwards when they appointed my old team-mate to replace Brendan Rodgers were thinking.

“At the same time, I wondered what Rodgers himself was thinking.

“Celtic’s former manager is doing a terrific job at Leicester just as he did at Parkhead.

“But he must have watched that with a touch of envy.”

Manchester City hero Vincent Kompany will be a featured pundit for the Citizens’ match against Liverpool on Sunday (4.30pm).

The Blues head to Anfield looking to claw back some of the deficit in the Premier League table.

Liverpool are currently six points clear of City at the top of Premier League, and a win would see Jurgen Klopp’s side extend the gap to nine points.

Kompany will be joining Jose Mourinho, Roy Keane, Graeme Souness, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher in the Sky Sports studio for the match.

David Jones will be presenting the Super Sunday coverage, as usual, with two matches on Sky throughout the day.

Kompany will be weighing in on Wolves vs Aston Villa (1.30pm), before attention moves to Anfield.

The former City captain is expected to shine a light on the inner workings of Pep Guardiola’s team on the show.

Last season, the two teams played out a 0-0 draw, with Guardiola making a number of tactical changes to make sure the champions didn’t lose at Anfield.

City will be without a number of first-team stars for the trip to Liverpool, as the Citizens have been inundated with injuries.

Leroy Sane, Aymeric Laporte, David Silva, Rodri, Ederson and Oleksandr Zinchenko are all set to miss the tie.

Meanwhile, Liverpool boast a near-clean bill of health for the match, with only Joel Matip, Xherdan Shaqiri and Nathaniel Clyne ruled out.

Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that City are the best team in the world, but Liverpool can still beat them.

“Are we capable of beating the best team in the world? Yes we are,” said Klopp.

“If you win against the best team in the world, then it makes you the best team in the world.

“But I think on a normal day City are still a step ahead. That is how it is. I don’t want to make us smaller than we are because we are incredible at times.

“It doesn’t make us smaller, we still want to beat Man City.”

Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic aims to stay with Bayern Munich.

The Croatia midfielder is currently on-loan with Bayern.

"I too think that's possible," he told the German giants' official website.

"Everything's positive in Munich so far, both in private and in terms of football.

"I have a one-year loan contract plus option to purchase. I'm just taking it step by step, from day to day. Let's see."

Juventus winger Douglas Costa insists there can be no underestimating AC Milan.

The two teams meet on Sunday.

“It's clear that the Milan of the past were a phenomenal team who won everything, but I believe Milan are still a good team and deserve great respect," he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Paqueta's an important player. I know him well from the national side.

“He has excellent quality, yet football in Europe is different to that in Brazil in terms of aggression and I believe he will show his value in time."
