Manchester City star De Bruyne was benched for Saturday’s 6-0 thumping of Watford in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

However, the Belgium international delivered a man of the match display after coming on in the second half, helping Pep Guardiola's side achieve a domestic treble for the first time in English football history.

On Saturday, Manchester City were simply too strong for Watford, dominating the Hornets.

Guardiola’s men raced into a two goal lead before half time courtesy of goals from David Silva and Gabriel Jesus.

Jesus then added a second after the interval, with Raheem Sterling bagging a brace of his own and De Bruyne getting on the scoresheet too.

Pundit Murphy believes, though, that Guardiola’s decision to bench De Bruyne may lead the Belgium international to think over his future.

“He is City's best player full stop – he showed that yesterday after coming on - and while Pep Guardiola can point to three trophies, it was still a risk in my eyes not to play de Bruyne in those final few weeks of the season,” he wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.

“I can only imagine it had something to do with protecting his fitness but he was on the bench for an awful long time, and I wonder if someone as good as him might seek assurances about whether Pep will play him more next season.

“No matter how good Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, David Silva and all City's other midfield players are, de Bruyne takes them up an extra level.

“I don't know de Bruyne's personality or his fitness levels after a couple of lay-offs this season but I think Pep may have to put an arm around his shoulder and explain if he's going to be first on the teamsheet next season.

“De Bruyne is that good, he won't want to be a substitute – even in team as good as this Manchester City one.”

De Bruyne, meanwhile, was delighted after helping Manchester City win the cup.

In the process, Guardiola’s side also became the first-ever to win all three domestic trophies in a single season.

That figure even rises to four if you count the Community Shield - which the club’s website does.

And De Bruyne said: "It feels a bit like an honour. After the Tottenham injury, mentally I was done.

"Five injuries in a year is a lot. But after a couple of days I was ready to be back with the team and help them win the title and in the final game and this game.

"I feel somewhat blessed to end the season in this way and show everyone that I am still the same.

“And hopefully next season will be better."
