Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says Australia should stand up for its “dignity and sovereignty” with China and calls for less economic reliance on the country.

“There’s only one response to countries that want to try and bully others and thats to stand up for your own dignity and sovereignty and stick together and make a different path now that does not include as much reliance on China,” he told Sky News host Rowan Dean.

Mr Canavan said the moves China has made under Xi Jinping have been “very concerning” as China was expected to liberalise but instead had an “authoritarian turn” and Australia should “decouple” from China.

“Our clear objective has got to be now to decouple ourselves from China as much as possible and find other markets because we cannot tie ourselves to a country that is seeking to threaten and bully others as much as China has in the past year
