  • House Judiciary Committee receives evidence in the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

  • Republicans attempt to disrupt hearing with motions and objections, but Democratic committee chair Jerry Nadler, N.Y. denies or votes down GOP requests.

WASHINGTON -- The House Judiciary Committee on Monday was the scene of bitter partisan sparring, as lawmakers questioned staff attorneys who presented the evidence so far gathered in the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

Over the course of more than eight hours, Republican lawyer Steve Castor and two Democratic staff lawyers, Barry Berke and Daniel Goldman fielded sharp questions from more than three dozen committee members.

The hearing likely represented the last time that public arguments would be made over whether or not to impeach the president over his alleged abuse of power in conditioning both a White House meeting and nearly $400 million in foreign aid to Ukraine on that country's willingness to open investigations into Trump's political opponents.

The Judiciary Committee is expected to meet later this week to draw up articles of impeachment charging Trump with "high crimes and misdemeanors" that include abuse of power, obstruction of Congress and potentially obstruction of justice.

"The scheme by President Trump was so brazen, so clear — supported by documents, actions, sworn testimony, uncontradicted contemporaneous records — that it's hard to imagine that anybody could dispute those acts, let alone argue that that conduct does not constitute an impeachable offense or offenses," Barry Berke, the majority counsel for the Judiciary Committee, said in his prepared remarks.

He added: "President Trump did what a president of our nation is not allowed to do."

Berke's Republican counterpart then made the opposite argument. "Very simply, the evidence in the Democrats' impeachment inquiry does not support the Democrats' conclusion that President Trump abused his power for his own personal, political benefit," Castor testified.

Following approximately three hours of opening statements from Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-NY, Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., the committee's top Republican, and the three lawyers, committee members were permitted to question Goldman and Castor, who presented the Intelligence Committee's two opposing reports.

From the start, Republicans came to the hearing primed to introduce procedural motions and objections designed to interrupt the flow of arguments and to fluster Nadler and the Democratic lawyers. But Nadler was ready for most of these motions, and quickly either denied or voted down the GOP's requests.

Certain interactions grew particularly heated, however. At one point, Democratic Judiciary counsel Berke was permitted to question Castor, and pressed him for inaccurately quoting the testimony of an aide to Vice President Mike Pence in his minority report.

Castor cited the aide, Jennifer Williams, as having called Trump's July 25 request that Ukraine investigate former Vice President Joe Biden "unusual." But Williams had actually testified that the request was "unusual and inappropriate," as well as "political in nature."

Berke asked Castor several different ways why the report had "misquoted" Williams.

"We didn't misquote her," Castor said repeatedly. The exchange only ended when GOP Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner loudly accused Berke of "badgering the witness," to which Nadler responded, "sharp cross-examination of a witness is not badgering the witness."

Several Republicans took issue with the fact that Berke, a renowned white collar defense attorney on a temporary assignment to the committee, was allowed to give an opening statement from the witness table at the start of the hearing, then cross examine Castor from the dais later on.

"I've been a judge, and I know you don't get to be a witness and a judge in the same case," said Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas.

Florida Republican Matt Gaetz, meanwhile, used part of his allotted time to attack Goldman over the majority lawyer's political donations.

"Are you here as a partisan advocate for the Democrat position, or are you here as a nonpartisan investigator of the facts?" Gaetz asked Goldman.

"I'm here to present the report that we did on our investigation, which was totally and completely reliant on the actual evidence that we uncovered," Goldman responded.

Gaetz pressed Goldman about what he said were "tens of thousands of dollars" that Goldman had donated to Democratic candidates.

"I think it's very important to support candidates for office," Goldman replied.

Ultimately, it's not clear what impact the day's proceedings will have on the forthcoming vote on whether to approve articles of impeachment against Trump.

Nadler has signaled that the committee will convene later this week to vote on individual articles. After these are approved by a majority of the Democratic-controlled House, a Senate trial would take place, most likely during January of next year.

Vango increases stake in high-grade Ned’s Creek Project

Vango increases stake in high-grade Ned’s Creek Project

Owner of the 410,000 ounce Trident resource in Western Australia, along with some highly prospective exploration territory, Vango Mining Ltd (ASX:VAN) has taken an 8.8% interest in Lodestar Minerals Ltd (ASX:LSR).

This presents as a highly strategic initiative by Vango from a number of perspectives.

Taking the equity stake strengthens its relationship with Lodestar in the Marymia gold district in the Mid‐West region of Western Australia which hosts Vango’s high‐grade Marymia Gold Project.

Vango will settle its strategic investment in Lodestar via Vango the issue of approximately 3.5 million ordinary fully paid shares at a deemed price of 17 cents to Lodestar with agreed escrow provisions.

Taking a stake in Lodestar also serves to reaffirm and consolidate its position as the dominant explorer-developer in the region.

It is worth noting that Vango has already established a farm in and joint venture agreement with Lodestar, providing it with an option to earn up to a 51% interest in the group’s Ned’s Creek Project which is in close proximity to the Marymia Project.

First phase drilling at Ned’s Creek underway

The first phase of drilling under the Farm‐in and JV Agreement has now commenced, with a 1,500 metre reverse circulation (RC) drilling program at the Contessa Prospect within the Ned’s Creek project area.

This program is designed to evaluate the high‐grade gold potential at the Contessa Prospect, which hosts previous very high‐grade drilling results, including 4 metres at 78.1 g/t gold from 140 metres and 5.1 metres at 28.1 g/t gold from 143 metres.

Included in both of those intercepts were smaller intersections of bonanza grade gold grading between 100 g/t gold and 134 g/t gold.

Drilling will also seek to test nearby supergene gold mineralisation intersected in previous aircore drilling at Contessa to scope the potential for a starter open‐pit operation.

Aldoro to commence drilling at Penny South in January

Aldoro to commence drilling at Penny South in January

Aldoro Resources Limited (ASX:ARN) has received approval for its Program of Work (POW) relating to the company’s maiden drilling program at the Penny South Gold Project in Western Australia.

A preliminary 5000 metre aircore (AC) campaign is schedule to commence in the second week of January 2020 and should take approximately 3 weeks to complete.

This first pass program aims to test the magnetic low corridor, interpreted as the strike extension of the Penny West Shear by the company’s recent targeting work.

Approximately 100 holes are planned at 100 metre x 25 metre spacing along two kilometres of strike.

Identifying similar mineralisation to nearby deposits

Aldoro will conduct sample analysis for gold and multi-element geochemistry for pathfinder elements known to be associated with mineralisation at the neighbouring Penny West and Penny North deposits.

The Penny South Gold Project is contiguous to Spectrum Metals’ (ASX:SPX) Penny West Project in the Youanmi Gold Mining District in the Murchison Region of Western Australia.

Commenting on this latest development, Aldoro’s managing director Caedmon Marriott said, “It is exciting to be moving ahead with our maiden drilling campaign at Penny South.

‘’The first pass program aims to test for shallow mineralisation in this target corridor that hasn’t adequately been tested by historic drilling.

‘’Also, we’ll be testing for combinations of gold and pathfinder elements, lithology and alteration, as indications of potential deeper mineralisation to be tested by a subsequent follow up program.”

Advertisers increased Google Shopping spend by 32%, Amazon Sponsored Product by 50% YoY this holiday cyber weekend

Advertisers increased Google Shopping spend by 32%, Amazon Sponsored Product by 50% YoY this holiday cyber weekend

Holiday PPC budgets continue to rise. Advertisers spent 32% more on Google Shopping ads and 50% more on Amazon Sponsored Products Ads between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday this year than last, according to an analysis of Tinuiti retail clients that the agency released Monday.

Google spend, clicks up. Not surprising, Shopping spend increased at a higher rate than text ads, but commerce advertisers still spent 25% more on text ads this cyber weekend compared to l same-client growth last year.

That extra spend yielded matching increases in ad clicks as overall CPCs didn’t budge. Text ad clicks rose by 25% and Shopping clicks were up 31%. CPCs for text ads remained flat compared to a year ago and increased by just 1% for Shopping ads. Breaking out desktop CPCs, however, there were increases of 18% for Shopping and 11% for text ads. Phone text ad CPCs actually fell by 6%.

Amazon on Google Shopping. The spend increase on Google Shopping came even in the face of greater competition from Amazon, which significantly raised its own profile on Google Shopping. Tinuiti found that Amazon’s impression share on Google Shopping was 87% higher this Black Friday than a year ago.

While investment in Amazon Sponsored Product Ads increased by 50%, clicks rose by just 29% as CPCs jumped up 16% compared to a year ago.

It was a bit of a different story for Sponsored Brands (formerly Headline ads). Ad spend on the format rose by 26% while clicks shot up 52% on CPCs that were 17% cheaper than last year.

Tinuiti reported that Sponsored Brands accounted for 15% as much spend as Sponsored Products for the median advertiser targeting both formats.

Impact on sales. Looking at a 24-hour conversion window, sales attributed to Sponsored Products increased by 31& year-over-year for the five-day period.

Sponsored Brands have a 14-day conversion window. Attributed sales were up 54% when compared to the entire 14-day window of last year. Tinuiti expects that percentage to increase as data populates, but noted that most of the advertisers’ attributed sales occur within 24 hours of the ad click.

Why we care. Tinuiti did not disclose conversion data for Google search campaigns, but despite the relative maturity of Google Ads, retail advertisers continued to see click volume rise over the holiday weekend. While Amazon is clearly making inroads in product search, this overall volume increase — and Amazon’s own activity on Google Shopping — underscore that search is still a key channel for retail marketing.

Amazon ads are designed to drive attributable sales on the platform. To help demonstrate the impact of Sponsored Brand ads on incremental sales, Amazon introduced new-to-brand metrics in January to reflect customers that haven’t bought from the brand on Amazon in the past 12 months. Among Tinuiti advertisers, 70% of conversion and 71% sales attributed to those ads of the five-day period were new customers.
