AMC zombie franchise The Walking Dead has been going from strength-to-strength with various spin-offs and TV movies in the pipeline. Not only do fans of the Robert Kirkman-created world have the movie series with Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) to look forward to but there will also be a new series of Fear The Walking Dead coming to screens last this year. Additionally, AMC confirmed it had partnered up with Amazon Prime on a brand new spin-off called The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which focused on a group of teens living in a post-apocalyptic world.
Why is The Walking Dead World Beyond season 2?
However, it’s been confirmed The Walking Dead: World Beyond will only be running for seasons in total.
There will be 10 episodes in each season with a limited series and story arc with a definitive conclusion.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association winter tour, Sarah Barnett from AMC told media including Forbes: “What we’re doing next is experimenting.
“We’re making a movie with Universal featuring the Rick Grimes character. And the third television series in this universe, World Beyond, focuses on the generation of survivors who have grown up post-apocalypse.
The Walking Dead World Beyond comes out in spring 2020
“Led by two young female leads, it is a perfect advancing of the universe in ways that are multi-generational, fresh and unexpected.”
She continued: “It is not imitating The Walking Dead either in substance or form - World Beyond is a two-season closed-ended series that will tell a very specific and distinct story.
“Scott Gimple, the chief content officer of this universe, and his team are planning other experiments in this space, including specials, digital short-form series and other innovations in form.”
So, it seems for AMC this is just an experiment as the television landscape and viewing habits change.
Also, according to Uproxx, The Walking Dead: World Beyond showrunner Matthew Negrete had a very specific story he wanted to tell with a clearly-defined ending.
The Walking Dead typically has 16-episode series which are split in half with a midseason break.
But Fear The Walking Dead has a straight run of 16 episodes without any break.
AMC and Amazon are yet to share a firm premiere date for the new series apart from spring 2020.

The two broadcasters have also yet to confirm if The Walking Dead: World Beyond will be dropping in one go or if it will be airing weekly like traditional linear TV.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond will continue to be set in a post-zombie world with a group of teens going out and forging their own path.
Although the show will have new characters, it looks like the series will still retain the same themes of humanity and what it means to be human.
The drama will continue to explore how humans are tested when put in extreme circumstances and the life choices they make in the face of conflict and danger.
